Michael Hamlyn is an international railway specialist with 40 years experience in railways, working with operating companies, system contractors, manufacturers, project managers and as a consultant, covering all rail sectors and technologies. Prior to becoming an Independent Consultant in 2007 he was Managing Director then President of Lloyds Register Rail. He specializes in railway technology, systems integration and the implementation of railway projects, including strategic reviews and audits, independent review, asset management, project management, safety and risk management and contract strategy. |
Michael is a Chartered Electrical Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers, with a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a Masters Degree in Management Studies. He is based in Hong Kong from where he serves clients in the Asia Pacific Region as an Independent Consultant. Michael is also a consultant to the Asian Development Bank.
Michael started his career with formal engineering management training sponsored by British Rail. After gaining experience in BR, he joined Hong Kong MTR to work on construction of the initial system, as an Engineer on the first line and Resident Engineer on the second line.
Later he joined the GEC to work as Systems Engineer on a mainline electrification project in Mexico. When GEC won a contract for project management, systems engineering and the supply of rolling stock for Seoul Subway Lines 3&4, Michael was appointed Resident Project Manager in Korea.
Having successfully managed the Seoul Subway project through its implementation lifecycle, Michael spent a year at Durham University Business School studying for a Masters Degree in Management Studies. He was later retained by the Business School to be visiting lecturer in Project Based Management for nine years.
Following the year at Durham, Michael joined the Nichols Group as Project Manager for the extension of the Docklands Light Railway into the City of London together with the upgrading of the initial railway. The scope of the project encompassed Civil Engineering, including a tunnelling contract, Mechanical and Electrical systems, and the procurement of Rolling Stock.
Michael was subsequently headhunted to join Tickford Rail as Managing Director. He was responsible for forming, managing and developing the rail business of Tickford, specialising in rolling stock design, consultancy and refurbishment.
Following the successful sale of Tickford Rail, Michael formed two consultancies specialising in rail; MHA Systems and International Risk Management Services. These companies expanded rapidly in the UK and in Asia and both companies were eventually sold to major international consultancy groups. Michael finished his career based in Hong Kong with Lloyds Register Rail, who purchased MHA Systems, expanding this business throughout Asia and Australia.
Since 2007, Michael has been offering his services as an Independent Consultant.
