Piers was born and educated in the UK and began his railway career with Canadian Pacific Railway in London.  He subsequently joined London Underground and worked in a number of front line positions until he was seconded to work overseas in London Transport International.  He was appointed to various projects in the US and Asia in an advisory capacity covering railway operations and engineering.

In 1986, Piers was engaged by Kennedy & Donkin as an advisor for the Channel Tunnel project and worked for a number of years on operating and engineering parts of the project, planning the design and operational systems.  In 1990, he was appointed to the position of Train Service Development Manager for London Underground with responsibility for financial control of all the rolling stock and signalling projects being carried out on the system.  A large part of the work covered the rolling stock refurbishment programme of the early 1990s.

Subsequently Piers set up his own consultancy company completing projects for Union Carriage & Wagon in South Africa setting up computerised project management and rolling stock design and production planning systems, for Kennedy & Donkin as operations and maintenance advisor for Bangkok Metro project planning and tender assessment where he totally redesigned the rolling stock depot to fit new site and the Siam elevated station complex to reduce size, complexity and cost of original design. Another project was for Brush Traction carrying out on site maintenance staff and driver training and computerised documentation preparation for the Channel Tunnel locomotives.

In 1997, he joined Bechtel to assist in the design and planning of the new West Rail system in Hong Kong.  He then moved to Singapore to run the South East Asia business development office for Adtranz.

In 2003, Piers was appointed as Engineering Director of a new senior management team set up to run the company’s £3bn London Underground manufacturing and maintenance projects. This included responsibility for all technical and system interfaces between the Bombardier contracts and Metronet.

Following the winning of the London Underground contract, Piers set up his own consultancy company and now has a wide ranging and recent consultancy portfolio in the UK and overseas, with project completed for both existing and new systems around the world including London, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Canada.  These projects include technical advice, preparation of franchise bids, tender assessment, setting up international consortia, engineering assurance, expert witness work, training book preparation and railway system studies.
